Your Article schema

Nothing is uploaded. The schema is built in your browser as you type.
Schema on every post, without doing it by hand.
Roborank connects to your CMS, finds the pages missing markup, metadata or internal links, and fixes them for you.
See how Roborank worksWhich type to pick
All four types below inherit from Article, so the fields are the same. The type is a signal about what kind of content it is, and picking the honest one is better than picking the one that sounds most impressive.
- BlogPosting for a normal blog post. This is the right answer most of the time.
- NewsArticle for actual news reporting with a publication date that matters. Do not use it on evergreen content to try to get into Top Stories, because Google checks whether the site is a news publisher.
- Article when nothing more specific fits.
- TechArticle for documentation, technical guides and how-to content aimed at a technical reader.
The fields that actually get read
Google's Article documentation lists a lot of properties and marks almost all of them as recommended rather than required. In practice a handful do the work.
headline has a hard limit at 110 characters, after which it gets truncated. image needs to be at least 1200 pixels wide for Discover and Top Stories eligibility, and Google asks for 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 crops of the same image so it can pick the one that fits the surface. datePublished and dateModified have to be honest, and a modified date that moves every night without the content changing is noticed. author is the one worth the most effort.
Author markup is the part people waste
An author field with a name and nothing else is close to worthless. What makes it useful is the URL, pointing at a real author page that says who the person is, what they have done, and what else they have written. That turns a string into something a search engine can connect to other work across the web, which is the whole mechanism behind E-E-A-T.
If the article genuinely has no individual author, use an Organization. Inventing a person is worse than admitting the company wrote it.
Common mistakes this tool catches
A modified date before the published date
Usually a template bug rather than a typo. It makes the whole block look untrustworthy, and some parsers reject it outright.
Headline over 110 characters
Not fatal, but the end gets cut. If your H1 runs long, write a shorter headline for the schema rather than letting Google choose where to cut.
No mainEntityOfPage
Without it, nothing in the markup says which page the article is. It matters on sites where the same article is reachable at more than one URL.
Images under 1200px
A 600px thumbnail makes the article ineligible for the image-led surfaces where article schema pays off most.
After you paste it in
Run the URL through Google's Rich Results Test, which reports specifically on Article eligibility, and through the Schema Markup Validator, which is stricter about syntax. If your CMS already outputs Article schema, check first: two Article blocks on one page is a common and avoidable mess. Most SEO plugins have a switch to turn theirs off.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use Article, BlogPosting or NewsArticle?
BlogPosting for a blog post, NewsArticle only for genuine news reporting from a site that publishes news, and Article when nothing more specific fits. They all inherit the same fields, so the choice is about describing the content honestly rather than about unlocking a feature.
Is Article schema required for ranking?
No. It is not a ranking factor on its own. What it does is make a page eligible for article rich results in Discover and Top Stories, and give search engines and AI assistants a clear read on who wrote what and when.
What image size does Article schema need?
At least 1200 pixels wide. Google recommends supplying 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 crops of the same image so it can choose whichever fits the surface it is rendering.
Do I need both datePublished and dateModified?
datePublished is the important one. Add dateModified only when the article genuinely changed. A modified date that updates on every deploy while the content stays the same is a signal search engines learn to ignore.
Does the author have to be a person?
No, an Organization is valid. But a named person with a URL pointing to a real author page carries much more weight, because it lets search engines connect that person to their other work.
My SEO plugin already adds Article schema. Should I use this too?
Not both. Two Article blocks on one page is a common source of conflicting markup. Either turn the plugin schema off and use this, or use the plugin and check its output with the Rich Results Test.
Is this Article schema generator free?
Yes, with no signup and no limit. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
